How to Generate Traffic to Your Startup's Website

If you're reading this article, you are probably a startup entrepreneur.

You have big dreams and aspirations for your company, but the question is how do you get people to notice what you are doing?

A lot of us start off with excitement and end up feeling the pressure of running out of resources.

Starting a business from scratch can be really tough when it comes to generating traffic because there isn't any proof that your product or service will work.

Here are 10 proven techniques to drive traffic to your website.

Build a Glossary

There’s no better way to generate traffic for your startup than to create a glossary.

A glossary is a collection of terms and concepts around your product or service.

It helps to educate visitors about what you do.

Given the large number of people that visit any given site, it is worth investing resources into informing them about what you offer in a way that is compelling, original and useful.

For example, if your startup offers digital marketing services, you could build a glossary of digital marketing terms.

Create High Quality Videos

A video can create up to 40% of a website’s front-page value.

Videos get 1.6x more shares than links and so are especially important for generating quality traffic.

They are 80% more likely to be viewed than text.

Whether you're a bootstrapping startup or an established enterprise, you can create a ton of traffic with a single YouTube video.

When looking for a video to feature on our blog, it became clear very quickly that creating videos was more important than thinking about tactics and strategies.

Really focus on making something that people want to click on, rather than thinking about how to drive people to it.

It's not worth it to spend time on something which isn't going to work.

Host Webinars

Constant exposure is the most effective way to validate your business idea, and there is no better way to get the word out than through webinars.

It is worth it to pay a few bucks to host a webinar if it can help you reach a wider audience and help you build your credibility as an expert.

Here are some of the reasons why I believe in webinars:

  • It gives you an opportunity to reach thousands of people in a short period of time.
  • It generates quality leads
  • It gives you the ability to show that you are an expert in your niche.

You can also repurpose the content from your webinar.

Content repurposing ideas:

  • Blog posts
  • Instagram posts
  • Twitter posts
  • YouTube videos

So, as you can see, creating a webinar is definitely worth your time.

Guest Posting

Guest posting on other websites is a great way to acquire targeted traffic and influential followers for your startup.

This process is also referred as "guest blogging".

Guest posting has many benefits:

  • Being visible on other websites
  • Attracting new visitors to your page
  • Increase in backlinks to your site

If you write high quality content, you can easily guest post on other websites in your niche, by simply sending them an email and asking them if they are interested.

A great way to find blogs that accept guest posts in your niche, is to Google the name of your niche, followed by "guest posts".

It's important that you include the quotation marks around guest posts.

Here is an example: travel "guest posts".

Then all of the search results will be travel related blogs that accept guest posts.

Create Sharable Content

There is an old saying surrounding digital marketing that goes: “Content is king”.

Everyone wants their content to be sharable.

With this in mind, it’s important to have a strong content strategy in place.

You must be able to create content that will generate links back to your website and this requires keyword research.

You can easily use tools like Ahrefs, Majestic SEO, or AnswerthePublic to find relevant keywords for your content.

Let's look at AnswerthePublic for example.

With this tool, all you need to do is enter a keyword, and then click Search.

You will then be shown questions that people are searching that are relevant to your keyword.

These questions can be used as content ideas for articles, videos, social posts, etc.

Add a "Click to Tweet" Widget

A "click to tweet" widget will add a clickable widget to your site, which when clicked, will open Twitter with a tweet already written out.

I highly recommend adding a click to tweet widget to highly shareable content.

I created the following widget in just a couple of minutes, click it to give it a try...

The tool I used is called clicktotweet.com, and as you can see, it looks great!

With this tool, you can select a theme, add your own custom text to the tweet, and view analytics.

Publish List Posts

Lists are incredibly engaging and shareable.

People love reading lists because as a reader, you know what you're getting.

Readers are much more likely to share list posts to social media, and they are also more likely to click onto search results that have numbers in the title.

I have published many lists to this blog, here are a few examples:

Lists are best when they are filled with valuable information, and easily digestible.

Reduce Your Bounce Rate

The bounce rate is the percentage of users who leave a webpage without taking an action.

If the pages on your website have a high bounce rate, there may be a problem with your content, or the website itself.

A high bounce rate will negatively impact your site traffic, conversions, SEO.

Here are 5 things you can do to reduce your bounce rate:

  1. Optimize your page load speed
  2. Create relevant & engaging content
  3. Optimize your website for mobile devices
  4. Ensure your site is easy to navigate
  5. Re-design your webpages to make them user-friendly

Start now, because the sooner you start, the sooner you can reduce that pesky bounce rate.

Don't Forget About Social Media

There are many ways that you can share your website content to social media.

Of course, when you publish a new post you can simply share a link to your social media pages, but there are also many more ways that you can use social media to get more website traffic.

Here are 5 things that I do to increase my website traffic using social media:

  1. Turn articles into Twitter threads
  2. Create YouTube videos from blog posts
  3. Turn tutorials into TikToks
  4. Post an Instagram Story to promote new articles
  5. Republish articles to LinkedIn to reach a new audience

As you can see, using social media to generate more website traffic can be hugely impactful.
